? >> absolutely. polls show that republicans would overwhelmingly be blamed if the united states goes over the proverbial fiscal cliff. and that's why president obama has an advantage, because he's willing -- he says, this is what he and his advisers say, he's willing to send the nation off of the fiscal cliff, letting all income tax rates to jump, spending cuts to take hold, investment income rates to jump. he's willing to do that. he thinks republicans would get the political blame. republicans, on the other hand, note that listen, the president's going to have to have another term where he's dealing with what's likely to be a deep recession as a result of these huge income tax jumps. so it's a position that neither man really wants to be in, but talks have completely dried up. yesterday speaker john boehner and president obama did not speak and their staffs did not speak. so really this thing is at a standstill like we've never seen before. >> yeah. so the fact that we're not even talking now. the aides aren't even talking the each other. where does that leave us? how comfortable is eve

more people voted. in my state more than a million more voters in ohio alone voted in significant numbers for president obama, increased numbers of senate and house democrats. all of us said we need to raise the rates for upper income people asking them to pay a little more. just what they paid a decade ago when the economy took off and we had a surplus instead of the tax cuts for the rich. they left us with fewer jobs and lower wages and budget deficits. >> can you keep the momentum in the public arena? 53% of americans say republicans will get the blame if we go off the cliff. are you confident democrats are going to be able to win this fight? only 27% would blame the president. how confident are you that that number will hold? >> that number gets better because the public is more and more, as the deadline gets near and the fiscal cliff approaches and becomes eminent, the public pays more attention. the facts are clear on this. the election said that we raise rates on the wealthiest people. just ask them to pay a bit more. the election said that basically they didn't believe rep

and other people lose. i've seen and atry beaut in president obama when i served with him in the state senate where he was able to rise above donkeys and elephants and transform some very controversial issues in a way that was powerful. and it's my hope that president obama rises to this opportunity , avoids this zero sum-game splash and instead leads the nation in ways that only one person can do. that is the president of the united states. house republicans are prepared to get to yes. house republicans are not prepared to get to foolish. and it is foolish to reject president obama's own self-described architecture of $3 -- or $3 in spending cuts for every $1 in new revenue. so we're prepared to work and we call on the white house to do the same thing. >> speaker boehner, president obama -- [inaudible] the fox news poll after the november election said 60% of voters supported this going up. a new poll in "the washington post" says 53% of americans -- [inaudible] how long can you afford politically to have this hard line on those tax cuts for those making $250,000 or above? >> america
